"No man gives me a crown. I pay the iron price. I will take my crown."
―Balon Greyjoy to Theon.

King Balon IX Greyjoy (formal: Balon of the House Greyjoy, Ninth of His Name), known pre-coronation as Balon Greyjoy, was the head of House Greyjoy, Lord Reaper of Pyke, Lord of the Iron Islands, captain of the Great Kraken, King of the Iron Islands, King of Salt and Rock, claimant to King of the Isles and the North, and Son of the Sea Wind. Balon was the eldest of the nine sons of Quellon Greyjoy, and one of his four sons to survive to adulthood. Balon first proclaimed himself King of the Iron Islands in 289 AC, six years after Robert's Rebellion, but his rebellion was doomed, and he lost his extremely brief kingdom. It wouldn't be until over ten years later that he would proclaim himself king again, becoming one of the many that would make up the War of the Five Kings. During phase II of the war, Balon fell to his death from a bridge during a storm at Pyke, and due to the timely arrival of his brother Euron, it is speculated that he was responsible. In the show however, Euron is confirmed to have assassinated Balon personally.
