"I will require a sword and armor. It seems I must be a warrior."
―Rhaegar to Willem Darry.

Prince Rhaegar Targaryen was a member and knight of House Targaryen, the Prince of Dragonstone, and a member of the Targaryen royal family. He was the firstborn child and son of Aerys II and Rhaella Targaryen, and the heir to the Iron Throne. He was described as courageous and attractive, although unlike many other warriors, he was more gentler, often singing in the streets, and was extremely intelligent. He married Elia Martell, where he had two children. He participated in a tourney at Harrenhal, where he infamously passed by his wife and lay a winter rose in Lyanna Stark's lap. A year later, he "kidnapped" Lyanna, and in conjunction with another set of events, set off a large scale civil war. Eventually forced to answer the call of combat, Rhaegar led a host of 40,000 to engage Robert's army, and during the battle, dueled with Robert himself. Despite Rhaegar's prowess in battle, he was eventually bested and killed by King Robert, unofficially reigning in the beginning of the end for the war.
