"Safety!? Where the fuck's that!? Her aunt in the Eyrie's dead. Her mother's dead. Her father's dead. Her brother's dead. Winterfell's a pile of rubble. There is no safety you dumb bitch. You don't know that by now...you're the wrong one to watch over her."
―Sandor to Brienne about Arya briefly before their duel.

Sandor Clegane is a member of House Clegane, a former bodyguard of Joffrey Baratheon, a former member of the Kingsguard and currently (in the show) a member of the Brotherhood Without Banners. Secondborn son of an unnamed father, Sandor had the right side of his face burned severely and permanently disfigured when his brother thrusted his face into a hearth when found to be playing with one of his toys. Much like his brother, Sandor went on to become a skilled swordsman as well as brutishly strong, although not as much as Gregor. He became the bodyguard of Prince Joffrey, and when Ser Barristan was dismissed from the Kingsguard, Sandor filled the void left behind, but did not assume the role of Lord Commander. Sandor deserted during the Battle of the Blackwater, fleeing north. After an encounter with the Brotherhood, he abducted Arya Stark, hoping to ransom her to Robb. After the Red Wedding, he tried again with Lysa Arryn, but she was killed before he got there. Finally, an encounter with Brienne of Tarth/a group of Clegane men left Sandor severely wounded, where Arya left him to die. In the books, his fate is ambiguous, although there are theories supporting his survival. In the show, it's stated outright that he survived, having recovered and gone on a path of redemption, leading him to join the Brotherhood.
