The Riverlands is a region in Westeros, and one of the nine constituent provinces of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and was, briefly during this period, part of the Second Kingdom of the North prior to its collapse. Prior to Aegon's conquest, the Riverlands was ruled by the Kingdom of the Rivers and the Hills, before it was conquered by the First Kingdom of the Iron Islands, both of which reformed into the Kingdom of the Isles and the Rivers. Following Aegon's conquest, the Riverlands became one of the seven main provinces of the Seven Kingdoms. During the War of the Five Kings, the Riverlands seceeded from the Seven Kingdoms and was annexed by the Second Kingdom of the North, until it effectively collapsed during the Red Wedding, with House Frey taking over the Riverlands. The entire region was devastated by the conflict, and the hardest hit. In the books, it is still under Frey control. In the show, House Frey's extinction has resulted in interim control returning to the remnants of House Tully.
